You see a video Blackjack game and the rules all appear quite reasonable. Then you notice that it pays 2 for 1 for a Blackjack. Isn’t that better than the normal 3:2? This is deceiving. The normal payoff is 3 to 2. On a $1 machine, that means you win $1.50 for every $1 bet. A 2 for 1 payoff means that you get $2 for every $1. But this includes your original $1! So you really only win $1.
The difference is in the use of the word “for” instead of the word “to.”
- 3 to 2 is the same as 5 for 2.
- 1 to 1 is the same as 2 for 1.
So when you see 2 for 1, it means 1 to 1 or an even payoff. Below is a chart displaying the percentage house edge for three standard casino games and 2 for 1 Video Blackjack.

In this chart, DAS means Double after Split and H17 means dealer Hits on Soft 17.
